Infamous founder of Pop Art, Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1928. As a champion of the Pop Art genre, Warhol became an illustrator in New York City following his studies at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. Differentiating himself from the prevailing style of the time, emotional Abstract Expressionism, Warhol chose instead to depict Realism of popular media through hard lines on prints, posters, and paintings. By 1960 he began creating paintings based on comic strip characters; using these works as department store window displays formed his reputation. His process began as hand paintings, reproducing them through a silk-screen. He then developed enlarged photographic images, from which he silk-screened directly onto canvas and paper. This invention enabled quick and cheap production, allowing his works to spread quickly and market to the public and art aficionados. He created sculptures from supermarket labels and American consumer society before turning to portraits of deceased famous figures and independent films. Warhol was known for his use of repetition and representation of modern culture. His choice of popular subject matter elevated popular culture into the fine arts, the hallmark of Warhol’s legacy and great influence over commercial and high art today.
