Marc Chagall, born 1887, was a Russian born French artist known for creating modern work in almost every medium including painting, illustrations, prints, sculpture, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic and tapestries. He became one of the most respected Jewish Artists of the 20th century. Through traveling through Eastern Europe just before the outbreak of WWI, he interpreted the Jewish folk culture and was inspired by French movements, such as Fauvism, to create a unique modern style of art. During the Nazi Regime, he found refuge in America. Here, as a well known artist, he settled among other exiled artists and began experimenting with creating sets and costumes. Upon returning to France worked with stained glass and created windows for Cathedrals and Opera houses around the world. He died in France in 1985.
