John Rood (1902-1974)

Born in Ohio in 1902, John Rood was a nationally recognized artist and leader in academia. He both studied and taught at the University of Ohio and was a resident artist at the University of Minnesota from 1944 to 1946 before becoming a professor in 1957. Rood spent most of his career in the Minneapolis though he had over a hundred one-man shows throughout the United States after success in his first show in New York in 1937. He went on to exhibit at international shows.  He preferred to work with natural materials such as wood and stone and later metal, using welding techniques and often experimented with the human figure. He died in 1974.
