Adolph Arthur Dehn was born in Waterville, Minnesota and began creating artworks at the age of 6. Dehn became a very accomplished lithographer and watercolorist. He studied at the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts and received a scholarship to the Art Students League in New York. Dehn moved to Europe in the early 1920s which became incredibly influential for his artistic style. He was exposed to the imagery of cabarets, parks, burlesque houses, and landscapes of Europe. He used these experiences and brought them back to America during the 1930s. He would paint farms of the Midwest and later the Northeast. Eventually, he moved to New York City. He preferred using watercolor for its spontaneity and his fluid nature.
