Gertrude Barnes (1865-1939)

Gertrude Barnes was born as Gertrude Jameson in Tyngsboro, Massachusettes in 1865. Barnes began her studies in art at the Cowles School in Boston and at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. She continued her studies at the Art Students League in New York. Barnes moved to Minneapolis in 1883 and studied under Douglas Volk at the Minneapolis School of Art. In Minneapolis, Barnes married a prominent businessman named Henry Barnes. She used this wealth and influence to support several several arts organizations. She also participated in several art exhibitions throughout Minnesota and in Chicago.

Gertrude Barnes was a charter member of the Artists League of Minneapolis and a big supporter of the Handicraft Guild of Minneapolis. The Handicraft Guild was a center for the Arts and Crafts movement.
