Josephine Lutz Rollins was born in Sherburn, Minnesota in 1896. She showed an interest in art at an early age and attended Cornell College and the University of Minnesota. She studied art at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. and the Minneapolis School of Art.
Josephine Rollins studied under the artist Cameron Booth in Minnesota and Hans Hoffman in Munich, Germany in 1930 and credits both artists as having a profound influence on her. Rollins spent nearly 40 years as an art instructor at the University of Minnesota as well as being a founding member of the Stillwater Art Colony. In 1965, Rollins was a co-founder of a women’s art collective at the West Lake Gallery in Minneapolis. She was incredibly involved in the art community throughout Minnesota.
Josephine Lutz Rollins’ work can be found in several important collections throughout the country. Her medium of choice was watercolor and she painted scenes throughout Minnesota as well as Europe, California and Mexico. Bright colors and a whimsical style are characteristic of her work.
