Douglas Volk (1856-1935)

Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1856, Douglas Volk was a leader in the art field. He was an instructor at several institutions in New York and organized the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts. He was a member of many societies including the American Federation of Arts, the National Society of Portrait Painters, International Societe Des Beaux Arts et des Lettres, and the Society of Mural Painters. Through his high status, he was commissioned abroad to paint the portraits of King Albert of Belgium and Lloyd George of England. He was sought after to paint many military and cultural leaders as well as government officials in the United States. In addition to his portrait work, he accomplished many American Landscape paintings with Colonial and Puritan imagery. Before his death in 1935, he moved to Maine and created his last series of paintings with the subject of Abraham Lincoln.
