Eanger Irving Couse (1866–1936)

Born in Saginaw, Michigan in 1866, Eanger Irving Couse settled in New Mexico where he became an important Native American painter. He studied at the National Academy of Design and in Paris where he met many other painters who would later travel to New Mexico as well. After establishing the Taos, New Mexico Society of Artists in 1915, he bought a convent and turned it into a studio, though he did most of his paintings outdoors. Taking inspiration from the colors of the great landscape, he painted the mountains and canyons in addition to local people. He remained in Taos until his death in 1936.
