Emil Gruppe (1896-1978)

Emil Gruppe was born in Rochester, New York in 1896. He spent much of his childhood in the Netherlands but his family returned to New York at the start of WWI. With all of his siblings pursuing the arts, he was continually surrounded by it and distinguished himself as a landscape painter. In 1940, he established the Gloucester School of Painting where the surrounding mountains and harbors became inspiration for his work, as well as his students. He later moved to Florida to paint, where he died in 1978.
