Harriet Frishmuth (1880-1980)

Born in 1880 in Philadelphia, Harriet Whitney Frishmuth is known for her bronze sculptures of female figures. She often used dancers as models to create pieces with graceful movement. Her strong sense of composition, form and anatomy developed from her unique combination of studying art in Paris under Auguste Rodin and later studying dissection at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. She owned a studio in New York until the great depression. After closing it, she continued to create art which she exhibited worldwide, including at the Salon in Paris. Many of her smaller works are in collections while her larger pieces become the brilliant focal point of outdoor spaces and gardens. One of her best known pieces, The Vine (1923), shows a larger than life figure doing an exaggerated arabesque. She died in 1980.
